the making of a portfolio - final product

I should have posted these pictures long time ago... better late than never I guess.

It is so rewarding to look back at the time when I worked on this and feel so accomplished and proud of my work. Work that made me a recipient of the LaBov & Beyond Visual Arts Achievement Scholarship last year.

Despite the intense hours I spent on this, I would definitely do it all over again if I had to. No doubt.

[ sketchbook ]

i am on a mission... i will design/build my very own sketch/research book. i've had this idea for quite some time now, so today i decided that it's time to finally start.
and what a better way to do so, than getting some inspiration from one of the most amazing and fascinating sketchbooks i have ever seen -- Guillermo del Toro's sketchbook for the movie Pan's Labyrinth. although my sketchbook might not be quite as fascinating, i will embrace it as mr. del Toro embraces his... of that i am very sure. stayed tuned and please, ask me about it once in a while!

Craftsmanship to talk about

I am always reminded of how strong my craftsmanship is. I don't want to sound like a big show-off, but I have to admit that when it comes to creating things with my hands, my ability can be impressive. I've always had high standards when it comes to my handmade work, and it certainly feels good to receive nice compliments from time to time.

Today, I was reminded of this project I did for my Package Design class last year. A 100% handmade box for a beautiful traditional Mexican dress that was handmade as well. We got it in one of our visits as we were getting ready to take off at the airport. Since the little girl has grown and cannot wear it anymore, it had been in the closet for quite a while. When I learned about the assignment to design a package for any type of clothing, I could not think of a better item!

As everything, I can't wait to take the time to improve it.

I'm back!

It feels like I've been absent forever... It is time to get back and create exciting things!
Spring semester looks good so far - taking two classes only, so I'm excited about the extra time.

First project for GD IV class: concept for a 'Reality TV show', teaming up with two other classmates. The whole campaign consisted of Billboards, Print Ads, Website and a Marketing Kit with DVD. I took charge of this last one, which came out pretty strong. I had so much fun and absolutely loved it!

... Yes, I had fun not only with the design, but with the whole presentation as well!

A mailer for Sideways...

The novel... Because once you have seen the movie and loved it, you need to read, or better listen to the audio book.

The idea behind this last project was to create a package for something not tangible, as it is the case of an e-book. How to package such? How to make people interested in it and direct them to look online? That was the challenge.

I created a box/book looking package that one could put on a coffee table. It carried the nice lime green color of the movie case. On the left side, a handy magnet with a 'helpful' website where you can download the e-book completely free!
On the right side has a velum cover with a phrase from the movie -- "It's not exactly finalized yet", which engages the viewer. Flip the page and you encounter a nice looking corkscrew.

What a better combination -- because if you feel like finalizing the whole deal by listening to the e-novel and drinking a bottle of wine, you better have a handy 'Helpline' in case you end up drinking and dialing!

Mockup

It's not all about food...
I've been working hard on my classes as well. Here, the first mockup for my package design class -- a button box. The concept: don't judge a book by its cover.

The box is 4.25x5.75 inches (when closed). I though it might make a good candy box or a stationery note cards contained. The inside is a complete surprise.... isn't it?
